Module 1(27
The following text is from a story.
The rowboat had spent eleven winters upside down in the reeds, and when the ice finally let go of the shore in March, Josie and her neighbor Mr. Petrakis rolled it onto a pair of sawhorses. Josie had assumed he would want the job done fast; all winter he had talked about getting the boat back on the water. Instead, he worked in a blank way, spending an entire afternoon sanding a single plank and stopping every few minutes to run his palm along the grain.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
選択肢 A:patient(正解)
B:hasty
C:reluctant
D:careless
Module 1 問2 Words in Context(文脈から語を選ぶ)・ふつう
In the nineteenth century, when a dangerous shoal lay too far from shore for a lighthouse to be built on it, ships were often warned away by a lightship, a vessel that was moored directly above the hazard and kept its lamps burning all night. Crews lived aboard for months at a stretch, and because the lamps could never be left untended, a sailor whose term had ended was not free to leave his post until another man arrived on the supply boat to relieve him. In winter gales, that boat was often weeks overdue.
As used in the text, what does the word “relieve” most nearly mean?
A:make less worried
「心配を減らす」は relieved(ほっとした)からの連想です。
B:save from danger
選択肢 C:take over from(正解)
D:keep amused
Module 1 問3 Words in Context(文脈から語を選ぶ)・ふつう
Filmgoers seldom wonder where the crunch of boots on snow or the patter of rain on a car roof comes from; such sounds seem to have been captured along with the picture. In fact, most of them are added later by Foley artists, who perform the sounds in a studio while watching the film on a screen. Their equipment is often surprisingly blank: the snow crunching under an actor’s boots may really be a small pouch of cornstarch pressed between an artist’s hands, and a downpour may be nothing more than a thin stream of water running onto a crumpled plastic bag.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
A:authentic
B:elaborate
C:fragile
選択肢 D:mundane(正解)
Hagfish, eel-shaped scavengers of the deep seafloor, have neither sharp teeth nor armor, yet baited cameras set out to study deep-sea feeding have repeatedly filmed sharks and large fish giving up their attacks on them within seconds. At the first bite, a hagfish releases mucus along with thousands of tightly coiled threads that unspool in seawater, producing a slime that clogs the attacker’s gills. The slime plainly ends the attack, but the researchers who reviewed the footage regard its longer-term cost to predators as blank: each attacker spat out its prey and swam off gagging, and the footage could not show what became of its gills once it left the camera’s view.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
選択肢 A:indeterminate(正解)
B:negligible
C:transient
D:grievous
The following text is from a poem.
The radio was on, and half a listof errands ran inside my head—the bank, the forms, the supper no one had begun—my foot pressed hard, as if to beat the dark.
Then, in the ditch beside the county road, where runoff pools among the cans and reeds,a heron stood, as gray as the culvert pipe, one leg drawn up, its long neck folded in.
It did not turn. It did not seem to breathe. The water held no fish that I could see,and still it waited, as if waiting werethe only task the evening asked of it.
I eased my foot off the gas. Behind me, someoneflashed his lights, and I drove on, but all the waythe list inside my head ran slower.
Which choice best describes the overall structure of the text?
A:The speaker describes a hurried drive home, then a heron standing perfectly still, and finally the speaker’s own slowing down.(正解)
B:The speaker describes a heron catching a fish in the ditch, then compares the bird’s skill with the speaker’s own clumsiness.
C:The speaker recalls watching herons as a child, then explains why such birds are now rarely seen beside busy roads.
D:The speaker complains about the cans littering a roadside ditch, then proposes a way that the ditch could be cleaned up.
In the cities of the Harappan civilization of the Indus Valley, some of which lay hundreds of kilometers apart, builders of the third millennium BCE fired bricks whose thickness, width, and length kept almost exactly the same proportions of 1:2:4. Such uniformity has often been taken as the signature of a powerful central government that dictated building standards to distant towns. [underlined begins] Yet excavators have not found, in any Harappan city dug so far, a grave that stands out as a king’s or a building that can confidently be called a ruler’s residence, although powerful governments in other ancient lands typically left both behind. [underlined ends] Some archaeologists therefore suggest that the standard was carried from city to city by traders and craft workers, for whom bricks of a familiar size made building faster and easier to teach.
Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence in the text as a whole?
A:It offers evidence that a central government imposed a single brick standard on distant cities.
B:It notes an absence of evidence that weakens the explanation presented in the previous sentence.(正解)
C:It casts doubt on whether bricks from different cities truly shared the same proportions.
D:It explains why builders in distant cities would have benefited from sharing one brick size.
Module 1 問7 Cross-Text Connections(2つの文章の関係)・ふつう
Text 1
Since the 1980s, many opera houses have projected translations of the sung words onto a narrow screen above the stage. Critic Gregor Lindahl regrets the practice. An opera, he argues, is meant to be watched as well as heard, yet audiences reading these surtitles spend the evening glancing upward, missing the singers’ faces and gestures at the very moments when the drama depends on them.
Text 2
Critic Beatriz Solano grants that surtitles pull some attention away from the stage, especially for a first-time listener. But she points out that many companies that adopted them have since sold far more tickets to people attending their first opera. For audiences who do not speak Italian or German, Solano contends, a moment spent glancing up is a small price for finally understanding the story being sung.
Based on the texts, how would Solano (Text 2) most likely respond to Lindahl’s argument in Text 1?
A:She would deny that audiences look away from the stage often enough to miss the singers’ faces and gestures.
B:She would agree that surtitles should be avoided in scenes where the drama depends on the singers’ acting.
C:She would argue that surtitles distract experienced opera fans more than they distract first-time listeners.
D:She would accept that surtitles draw eyes away from the stage but hold that the gain for new audiences is worth it.(正解)
The following text is from a story.
Every winter, the same man boarded Lidia’s night bus at the hospital stop a little after midnight. He wore a gray knitted cap, paid with exact coins, and rode all the way to the last stop, a turning loop beside the frozen river, where no one else ever got off. He never spoke. Lidia had offered a greeting or two in his first weeks and then stopped expecting a reply. Still, she found herself slowing at the hospital stop even when no one stood under its light, and on the few nights he did not appear, the empty run to the river felt longer than the timetable said it was.
Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
A:Lidia suspects that the passenger works at the hospital and rides to the river to reach his home.
B:Lidia is annoyed that the passenger ignores her greetings and wishes he would ride a different bus.
C:Although the passenger never speaks, Lidia has come to value his quiet presence on her route.(正解)
D:The night route is so empty in winter that Lidia worries the bus company will cancel it.
When sand avalanches down the steep downwind face of a booming dune, the dune gives off a deep, steady hum that can carry for kilometers. A long-standing explanation holds that the sound comes from the moving grains themselves: as the grains tumble, their collisions fall into step, and the pitch of the hum reflects how often they collide. Researchers who recorded several booming dunes found, however, that a given dune hummed at nearly the same pitch whether its avalanches were fast or slow. They also found that each of these dunes had a loose, dry surface layer resting on firmer sand below, and that dunes with thinner surface layers hummed at higher pitches. The researchers propose that an avalanche merely sets the surface layer vibrating, while the layer’s thickness determines the note.
Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
A:The findings indicate that sliding sand plays no part in a dune’s hum, which comes instead from the firm sand beneath the surface layer.
B:The findings suggest that a booming dune’s pitch depends mainly on the dune’s layered structure rather than on how fast its sand slides.(正解)
C:The researchers found that fast avalanches make a dune hum at a higher pitch than slow ones do, just as the long-standing explanation predicts.
D:The researchers found that each booming dune they studied had a loose, dry layer of sand resting on a layer of firmer sand.
Along the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, archaeologists have uncovered dozens of Roman-era workshops where fish were packed with salt in stone vats and left to ferment into garum, a strong-smelling sauce shipped across the empire. Because the region’s largest catches came each spring, when schools of tuna passed close to shore, many historians have claimed that the workshops operated only during those few weeks and stood idle for the rest of the year.
Which finding, if true, would most directly weaken the historians’ claim?
A:Jars that once held garum from the Iberian coast have been found at sites hundreds of kilometers from the sea.
B:Several of the workshops had storerooms large enough to hold jars of finished sauce for many months.
C:Tuna bones make up most of the fish remains found in the vats of the largest workshops.
D:Residue in many vats contains bones of small fish that come near that coast only in autumn and winter.(正解)
Module 1 問11 Command of Evidence: Quantitative(表やグラフから根拠を選ぶ)・やさしい
For one year, staff at the Corlett Museum of Art recorded the age group of every visitor who rented an audio guide, a handheld device that plays recorded commentary about the works on display. Some staff members had expected the youngest visitors, who are used to listening through headphones, to rent the guides most often. The count showed otherwise: visitors aged 65 and older rented more audio guides than any other age group did.
| Visitor age group | Audio guide rentals |
|---|---|
| Under 18 | 1,240 |
| 18–34 | 3,960 |
| 35–64 | 5,410 |
| 65 and older | 6,830 |
Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to support the finding described in the text?
A:Visitors aged 65 and older rented 6,830 audio guides, more than visitors in any other age group.(正解)
B:Visitors aged 35 to 64 rented 5,410 audio guides, more than visitors aged 18 to 34 did.
C:Visitors under 18 rented 1,240 audio guides, more than visitors in any other age group.
D:Visitors aged 18 to 34 rented 3,960 audio guides, more than visitors aged 65 and older did.
Streetlights draw moths and other night-flying insects, and some bats feed on the gathered prey. Many cities are now replacing orange sodium streetlights with white LED lights, which attract even more insects. To learn how the change affects bats, ecologist Aoife Brennan counted bat passes per night along streets lit by each kind of lamp and along unlit streets. She concluded that the switch will likely help species that feed at lights, such as noctules and pipistrelles, while putting added pressure on species that avoid light, such as horseshoe bats.
Bat Passes per Night by Type of Street Lighting
Which choice most effectively uses data from the graph to support Brennan’s conclusion?
A:Under LED lights, noctules made 35 passes per night and pipistrelles made 30, compared with only 10 and 15, respectively, along unlit streets.
B:Horseshoe bats made 20 passes per night along unlit streets, compared with 10 under sodium lights and only 5 under LED lights.
C:Under LED lights, noctules made 35 passes per night and horseshoe bats made 5, compared with 30 and 10, respectively, under sodium lights.(正解)
D:Under sodium lights, noctules made 30 passes per night and pipistrelles made 25, while horseshoe bats made only 10.
Module 1 問13 Inferences(論理的に文を完成させる)・ふつう
In the early 1900s, many farm families in the rural United States lived far from any store that sold garden seeds, so most grew tomatoes from seeds saved from the previous year’s crop. Mail-order seed companies offered an alternative: each winter they mailed free catalogs describing dozens of newly developed tomato varieties, which could be ordered for a few cents a packet. Historian Lorna Pettigrew has found that in the 1910s, county fairs in areas that had recently gained regular mail delivery listed far more tomato varieties among their prize entries than fairs in otherwise similar areas that still lacked such delivery. This pattern suggests that blank
Which choice most logically completes the text?
A:farm families without regular mail delivery preferred the tomatoes they had always grown to newly developed varieties.
B:the spread of newly developed tomato varieties among farm families depended partly on whether mail reached those families regularly.(正解)
C:seed companies developed new tomato varieties chiefly so that farm families could win prizes at county fairs.
D:county fairs were held more often in areas with regular mail delivery than in areas without it.
Module 1 問14 Inferences(論理的に文を完成させる)・むずかしい
In many styles of Arabic calligraphy, letters are sized by a unit that the pen itself supplies. The calligrapher presses the slanted tip of a reed pen briefly to the paper, leaving a small rhombus-shaped dot, and stacks these dots to check a letter’s height. Within a given style, the alif, a single upright stroke, must stand a fixed number of dots tall, and every other letter is drawn in proportion to the alif. Because a broad tip leaves a larger dot than a narrow one, these rules fix the proportions of the letters rather than their size on the page. It follows that a calligrapher who learned a style with a broad pen and then switches to a narrow one blank
Which choice most logically completes the text?
A:will need to learn new proportions for the letters, since each dot the narrow pen makes is smaller.
B:must add dots to the alif so that the letters stay as tall as they were with the broad pen.
C:will produce letters of the same height as before, since the alif is still a fixed number of dots tall.
D:will keep the letters in the same proportions as before but will produce smaller letters.(正解)
Module 1 問15 Boundaries(句読点)・やさしい
Cut a large hailstone down the middle, and its inside may look like an archery target, with cloudy bands and clear bands alternating from the center outward. The bands record the changing conditions the stone met as air currents tossed it up and down through a thunderstorm. A cloudy band owes its milky look to air. In the storm’s coldest reaches, droplets freeze solid the instant they strike the stone and blank countless bubbles of air inside the new layer. Clear bands form where the cold is milder, since incoming water then has time to coat the stone as a liquid film before it hardens.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:trap,
B:trap:
選択肢 C:trap(正解)
正解。countless bubbles of air
選択肢 D:trap;
semicolon(セミコロン)は完全な文どうしをつなぐ記号です。
Cooks season a new cast-iron pan by rubbing it with a thin coat of oil and heating it in an oven for about an hour. The heat causes the oil’s molecules to react with oxygen and link to one another. The long, tangled chains that this reaction produces blank a hard, slick layer, which keeps food from sticking and protects the iron from rust.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
選択肢 A:form(正解)
that this reaction produces
B:forms
C:is forming
D:has formed
verb(動詞)は subject(主語)の中心の名詞に数を合わせます。
Archaeologists digging in the remains of Viking-age towns in Scandinavia have uncovered many ice skates made from the leg bones of horses. More than a thousand years ago, people blank one side of each bone flat, tied it to a shoe with leather straps, and pushed themselves across frozen lakes and rivers with a pointed pole.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
選択肢 A:shaved(正解)
正解。More than a thousand years ago
B:will shave
C:shave
D:have shaved
Module 1 問18 Boundaries(句読点)・ふつう
For the glassblowers of Murano, the island was both a workshop and a kind of fence. Venice had banished their furnaces there in 1291 because a single stray spark in the city center could ignite the city’s densely built wooden blank being gathered on one island also put every master under the close watch of the state, which guarded their recipes for clear and brightly colored glass and could punish anyone who left to work abroad without permission.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:buildings, however,
comma splice(コンマスプライス)という誤りです。
C:buildings however,
run-on sentence(連続文)と呼ばれる誤りです。
D:buildings, however
however・therefore・moreover などは conjunctive adverb(接続副詞)で、and や but のように文と文をつなぐ力はありません。
In a desert town where summer temperatures often climb above 40 degrees Celsius, a group of architects has begun building houses with rammed earth, an ancient method in which damp soil is packed into wooden frames and pounded until it is nearly as hard as stone. The thick walls take in heat slowly during the day and release it after dark. Pleased with the first homes, the town council has added rammed earth to the list of materials that blank building code allows for new houses.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
選択肢 A:it’s
it's は it is か it has を短くした形です。
選択肢 B:its(正解)
C:they’re
they're は they are を短くした形です。
D:their
pronoun(代名詞)は、指している名詞と数を合わせます。 it's と they're は it is・they are を短くした形です。
Module 1 問20 Boundaries(句読点)・むずかしい
In Trinidad in the 1940s and 1950s, musicians turned discarded oil barrels into steelpans, tuned drums that can play full melodies. The work called for only a few simple tools: a sledgehammer, which sank the barrel’s top into a shallow blank a steel punch, which marked out the separate patches of metal that would become notes; and a small hammer, which shaped each patch until it rang at the intended pitch.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:bowl,
B:bowl
C:bowl:
The red-eyed tree frog does not lay its eggs in water. Instead, it fixes a clutch of them, each wrapped in jelly, to a leaf dangling above a rainforest pond, where the embryos usually remain for about a week before hatching. A predator can cut that stay short in a matter of seconds. Biologists have shown that the embryos can distinguish the jerky shaking of a snake’s bite from the steady patter of rain. Sensing the jolts of an attack, blank
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:the eggs split open early, dropping the embryos into the water below.
B:early hatching allows the embryos to drop into the water below.
C:the embryos’ early hatching sends them into the water below.
D:the embryos hatch days early, dropping into the water below.(正解)
文の最初に置かれた modifier(修飾語句)は、すぐ後ろの main clause(主節)の subject(主語)を説明します。
Module 1 問22 Transitions(接続語)・やさしい
On November 21, 1783, two men rose above Paris in a hot-air balloon and drifted over the city for about twenty-five minutes before landing safely several miles away. No one had ever traveled through the air in this way, and news of the flight spread quickly. blank the balloon launches that followed in France drew enormous crowds of curious spectators.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:However,
選択肢 B:As a result,(正解)
C:Similarly,
D:Instead,
transition(つなぎ言葉)は、2つの文の関係を表します。
Module 1 問23 Transitions(接続語)・ふつう
In most advertisements for wristwatches, the hands are set at about ten minutes past ten. Some people say the time honors a famous event, but the companies that make watches give more ordinary reasons. Angled up and apart, the hands leave most of the dial open, so they hide neither the maker’s name near the top nor any date window or small extra dials farther down. blank the two upturned hands look a bit like a grin, so the watch seems friendly at first glance.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
B:Instead,
C:Nevertheless,
D:For example,
Module 1 問24 Transitions(接続語)・むずかしい
Every autumn, huge swarms of globe skimmer dragonflies appear in the Maldives, low coral islands in the Indian Ocean with almost no fresh water in which the insects could breed. Biologist Charles Anderson has proposed that the swarms fly in from India and then ride monsoon winds across the open ocean to East Africa. blank no one has yet followed a single dragonfly over the entire route. But the timing of the swarms’ arrival at each stop, along with chemical traces in their wings that match rain falling in India, fits his account well.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:Indeed,
B:Consequently,
D:For instance,
Module 1 問25 Rhetorical Synthesis(目的に合わせて書く)・やさしい
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- In Mumbai, India, workers known as dabbawalas deliver home-cooked lunches from people’s homes to their offices.
- Each lunch travels in a metal container called a dabba, which usually passes through the hands of several dabbawalas and rides partly by suburban train.
- The lid of every dabba is painted with a short code made of letters, numbers, and colors.
- The code tells the workers which station the dabba must be taken to and which building and floor it must be delivered to.
- The service dates back to the 1890s.
The student wants to explain what information the painted code on a dabba gives the workers. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:Dabbawalas, workers in Mumbai, India, have been bringing home-cooked lunches to people’s offices since the 1890s.
B:A dabba usually passes through the hands of several dabbawalas on its way to an office, traveling partly by suburban train.
C:The lid of every dabba that the dabbawalas carry is painted with a short code made of letters, numbers, and colors.
D:The code painted on a dabba’s lid tells the dabbawalas which station to take it to and which building and floor it goes to.(正解)
Module 1 問26 Rhetorical Synthesis(目的に合わせて書く)・ふつう
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- The first alebrijes were made in the 1930s by Pedro Linares, an artisan in Mexico City.
- Linares shaped his creatures from paper and paste molded over wire frames.
- In the 1980s, woodcarvers in villages near the city of Oaxaca began making alebrijes of their own.
- The Oaxacan carvers cut their figures from the soft wood of the copal tree.
- Makers in both traditions often invent beasts that borrow parts from several animals, perhaps setting a goat’s horns and a bat’s wings on a dog’s body, and they usually cover the finished piece in vivid paint.
The student wants to contrast the materials Linares used with those of the carvers near Oaxaca. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:Linares made the first alebrijes in Mexico City in the 1930s, and carvers near Oaxaca began making their own in the 1980s.
B:Linares shaped his alebrijes from paper and paste, whereas the carvers near Oaxaca cut theirs from the soft wood of the copal tree.(正解)
C:Both Linares and the carvers near Oaxaca often invented fanciful beasts that combine the body parts of several different real animals.
D:Near Oaxaca, carvers began making alebrijes in the 1980s, cutting their figures from the soft wood of the copal tree.
Module 1 問27 Rhetorical Synthesis(目的に合わせて書く)・むずかしい
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- Orb-weaving spiders build the frame of a web from dragline silk, fastening each frame thread at both ends.
- In very humid air, or when the silk gets wet, water enters the fiber and breaks some of the weak bonds that keep its protein chains stretched out.
- The freed chains coil up, so a loose fiber can shrink by as much as half its length, an effect called supercontraction.
- A fiber that is held at both ends cannot shrink; instead, it pulls tight.
- Some biologists suspect that this pull is useful: it may keep a web from sagging when beads of water from dew or rain collect on its threads.
The student wants to explain to an audience unfamiliar with supercontraction why this process makes the threads of a web’s frame pull tight rather than shrink. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:When water breaks weak bonds in dragline silk, the freed protein chains coil up; this process, supercontraction, can make a loose fiber of the silk shrink by as much as half its length.
B:Because each frame thread is fastened at both ends, supercontraction does not affect it the way it affects a loose fiber; the frame thread pulls tight instead.
C:In supercontraction, water lets the protein chains in dragline silk coil up, shortening a loose fiber; since a web’s frame threads are held at both ends, they pull tight instead.(正解)
D:Some biologists think supercontraction, the shrinking of dragline silk when it gets wet, helps a web stay taut when dew or rain weighs down its threads.
The following text is from a story.
Snow closed the road to the farmhouse on Friday night, and by Saturday morning the twin sisters had divided the kitchen table between them. In the middle lay a thousand-piece puzzle of a fishing harbor, and by an old family rule, whoever pressed in the last piece would choose every meal until the plows came through. Greta was so blank to win that she ate her lunch standing up, sorting gray pieces of sky with one hand while Maren pretended not to watch.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
A:reluctant
選択肢 B:determined(正解)
C:puzzled
D:relieved
More than three thousand years ago, at the court of the Shang kings in northern China, diviners put the king’s questions to the spirits by heating the shoulder blades of oxen and the flat lower shells of turtles until the bone cracked. The king read the cracks as an answer, and the question was then cut into the bone beside them. Many of the questions that survive concern blank matters: whether rain would fall in the next ten days, whether the millet would ripen, whether a hunt would go well.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
選択肢 A:practical(正解)
B:ceremonial
C:foreign
D:artistic
In the dry lands of western India, builders over many centuries cut stepwells deep into the earth: stone stairways that descend, landing after landing, to the level of the groundwater. Many were lined with carved pillars and shaded galleries. Because the air near the water stayed noticeably cooler than the air above, the lower landings offered shelter in the hottest months, and the wells drew travelers and neighbors who came not to fill their jars but to rest and talk in the shade.
As used in the text, what does the word “drew” most nearly mean?
選択肢 A:attracted(正解)
B:lifted
C:selected
D:depicted
In one experiment, plant biologists grew pea seedlings in dry soil, each pot fitted with two sealed tubes: one carrying running water, the other empty. Since the tubes released no moisture, the roots had no damp soil to follow, yet they bent reliably toward the tube with water flowing through it, apparently guided by its sound. The researchers nonetheless describe the roots’ attraction to sound as blank: when the team moistened the soil beside the silent tube, the roots grew toward that damp soil instead.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
A:illusory
B:unwavering
選択肢 C:contingent(正解)
D:innate
Do young children become more generous toward someone they have just worked with? Developmental psychologist Tereza Novak and her colleagues tested this idea with pairs of four-year-olds. Some pairs built a single block tower together, taking turns to add each block; other pairs built two separate towers side by side. Afterward, every child was given ten stickers and invited to give some to their partner. Children who had built a tower jointly gave away nearly twice as many stickers as children who had built alone.
Which choice best states the main purpose of the text?
A:To describe a study suggesting that working together can make young children more willing to share(正解)
B:To explain the method that four-year-olds use to build a block tower that will not fall over
C:To argue that young children share more generously with adults than with other children
D:To compare how children of different ages respond to being given stickers as a reward
In its first years, the theremin was treated by many listeners as a novelty: a wooden cabinet with two metal antennas that gave off eerie, sliding tones as a player’s hands moved through the air near it, never touching it at all. One of the instrument’s first serious performers set out to change that view. [underlined begins] For years she practiced controlling hand movements so small that an onlooker could barely see them, since without keys or strings to press, the slightest tremor would push a note out of tune. [underlined ends] In time she was playing music written for the violin on the theremin in recital halls, and critics who had once smirked at the instrument were reviewing her concerts as seriously as any violinist’s.
Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence in the text as a whole?
A:It describes how the theremin produces sound without being touched by the player.
B:It shows the demanding work the performer did to master an instrument that is hard to play accurately.(正解)
C:It gives the reason that critics had at first smirked at the theremin.
D:It identifies a weakness of the theremin that eventually led the performer to give it up for the violin.
Text 1
Many duck-billed dinosaurs had hollow head crests, and paleontologist Sunniva Holt argues that the crests were built for sound. The animals’ nasal passages looped up through the crest in long, curving tubes, and when Holt’s team pushed air through a model of one crest, the tubes produced deep tones, much as a horn does. The crests, Holt concludes, evolved chiefly to deepen the animals’ calls.
Text 2
Paleontologist Mateus Pinheiro notes that crest shapes vary sharply among closely related species: a long backswept tube in one, a tall helmet in another, a narrow blade in a third. Crests also stayed small until adulthood. A tube that deepens a call, Pinheiro observes, could fit inside a head of almost any outline. The variety of outlines suggests instead that the crests were meant to be seen, helping adults recognize their own species and judge potential mates.
Based on the texts, how would Pinheiro most likely respond to Holt’s conclusion about the crests?
A:He would argue that the tubes inside the crests were too narrow to produce the deep tones that Holt’s team recorded.
B:He would contend that a sound-making function does not explain why crest shapes differ so much among related species.(正解)
C:He would accept it, since a crest that deepened the animals’ calls could also have helped them attract mates.
D:He would suggest that Holt’s model was flawed because it was based on the small crest of a young animal.
The following text is from a story.
The wind on the school field was strong enough to flatten the grass, and Meera was certain it would rip the kite out of her hands. Her brother Arjun had built the kite the night before from a green trash bag and two thin strips of bamboo. Now he crouched beside her and closed her fingers around the spool. “Don’t run,” he said. “Everyone runs. Just let the string out a little at a time, and let the wind do the work.” Meera planted her feet and fed out the line while the kite jerked and dipped. Then it caught the wind, rose above the goalposts, and held steady there, pulling at her hands as if it wanted to go higher.
Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
A:Arjun worries that the kite he built the night before will not survive the strong wind.
B:Arjun tells Meera that she will have to run across the field to get the kite into the air.
C:Following her brother’s advice, Meera gets the kite aloft by letting out the string slowly rather than running.(正解)
D:Meera grows frustrated as the wind keeps pulling the kite back down toward the ground.
Late in the eighth century, paper mills in Baghdad began turning worn linen rags into sheets for writing, and before long the caliph’s government had become one of their most important customers. Until then, officials had often kept tax registers and letters of state on parchment, a material made from animal skins. Parchment was durable, but it had a weakness: a clerk with a sharp blade could scrape the ink from its smooth surface and write something new in its place, leaving little sign of the change. On paper, ink soaked into the fibers, so an erasure was far easier to spot. Later historians reported that administrators in Baghdad favored paper for their records for this reason.
According to the text, why did administrators in Baghdad favor paper for their records?
A:A change made to a paper document was more likely to be noticed than a change made to a parchment one.(正解)
B:Paper held up better than parchment when records had to be stored for many years.
C:Linen rags were easier to obtain than animal skins, so paper could be made in greater quantities.
D:Ink could be scraped from paper more easily than from parchment, so clerks could correct their mistakes.
In a trompe-l’oeil ceiling, painted columns and arches seem to rise straight through the roof toward an open sky. The illusion holds from only one spot, however; seen from anywhere else in the room, the columns appear to lean and bend. In some churches, a small stone disc set into the floor marks that spot. Art historian Livia Contarini argues that these discs were part of the painters’ plans from the start, not later additions by the churches’ caretakers. The painters, she maintains, chose the viewing point first and then laid out every line of the painted architecture so that it would look correct from there.
Which finding, if true, would most directly support Contarini’s argument?
A:Visitors to the churches today report that the painted columns look most convincing when viewed from the disc.
B:Account books from several of the churches record payments to stonemasons for setting the discs into the floor decades after the ceilings were finished.
C:Some painted ceilings in churches that have no floor disc also produce a convincing illusion from one particular spot.
D:Sketches the painters made before beginning work show the disc’s position on the floor, with guide lines drawn from it to the painted architecture.(正解)
Many lichens, the crusty or leafy growths often seen on old stone, are harmed by air pollution, including the nitrogen compounds in vehicle exhaust. Ecologist Rhys Pemberton surveyed a rural cemetery beside a busy highway, counting the lichen species growing on gravestones at four distances from the road. Because older stones have had more time to be colonized, he also recorded the average age of the stones at each distance. Pemberton concluded that gravestones near the highway supported fewer lichen species than gravestones farther away.
| Distance from highway (meters) | Average age of gravestones (years) | Number of lichen species |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 96 | 3 |
| 50 | 104 | 7 |
| 150 | 99 | 11 |
| 400 | 101 | 16 |
Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to support Pemberton’s conclusion?
A:Gravestones 50 meters from the highway had 16 lichen species, while those 150 meters away had 7.
B:Gravestones 10 meters from the highway had 3 lichen species, while those 400 meters away had 16.(正解)
C:Gravestones 10 meters from the highway had an average age of 96 years, compared with 101 years for those 400 meters away.
D:Gravestones 150 meters from the highway had an average age of 99 years and had 11 lichen species.
When the Valley Telephone Company opened its first automatic exchanges in the early 1920s, callers in those towns could dial one another directly instead of asking a switchboard operator to connect them. One might expect the company to have begun shrinking its operator workforce right away. Historian Maren Dahl argues otherwise: for about two decades after the first automatic exchanges opened, she contends, the number of operators the company employed did not fall, even as more and more of its exchanges became automatic.
Operators and Automatic Exchanges, Valley Telephone Company
Which choice most effectively uses data from the graph to support Dahl’s argument?
A:The number of automatic exchanges rose in every decade shown, from 0 in 1915 to 60 in 1975.
B:In 1915, the company employed 45 operators and had not yet opened any automatic exchanges.
C:Between 1955 and 1975, the number of automatic exchanges rose from 35 to 60, while the number of operators fell from 55 to 10.
D:Between 1925 and 1945, the number of automatic exchanges rose from 5 to 20, while the number of operators rose from 60 to 75.(正解)
Module 2(やさしいほう) 問13 Inferences(論理的に文を完成させる)・やさしい
The following text is from a story.
On Saturdays, sixteen-year-old Rosa priced the used books that customers sold back to her family’s shop. That morning an elderly man, Mr. Albescu, had brought in a box of travel guides, saying they only took up space now. He had lingered over one of them at the counter, turning it over twice in his hands before finally adding it to the pile. Now, as Rosa opened that guide, a pressed violet slipped from between its pages. Beside the spot where it had rested, someone had written a date and the word Lucerne in faded pencil. Rosa slid the flower into an envelope, wrote Mr. Albescu’s name on the front, and set it by the register, confident that blank
Which choice most logically completes the text?
A:he had meant for the violet to be sold along with the guide.
B:he would want the violet back even though he had sold the guide.(正解)
C:the guide would sell more quickly with the violet left inside it.
D:he had never visited any of the places the travel guides described.
Module 2(やさしいほう) 問14 Inferences(論理的に文を完成させる)・むずかしい
Most crossword puzzles printed in American newspapers follow a rule that solvers seldom notice: the pattern of black squares must look exactly the same after the grid is given a half turn, so that the top-left corner trades places with the bottom-right. Editors insist on this rotational symmetry purely for the sake of appearance. The rule governs only the black squares, not the letters written in the white ones, but because black squares mark where each answer begins and ends, it limits the lengths of answers all the same. In a standard grid of 15 rows and 15 columns, then, a constructor who places a 13-letter answer across the third row from the top has also committed to a grid in which blank
Which choice most logically completes the text?
A:a 13-letter answer runs across the third row from the bottom.(正解)
B:the answer in the third row from the bottom repeats those 13 letters in reverse order.
C:a 13-letter answer runs down the third column from the left.
D:the third row from the bottom has black squares in exactly the same columns as the third row from the top.
In many rivers of the Amazon basin, the water carries so much mud that a fish can see almost nothing around it. Weakly electric fish have another way to find one another. An organ near the tail sends out a steady stream of electric pulses, far too faint to harm anything, and sensors scattered across the skin pick up the pulses of other fish nearby. Because each species pulses in a rhythm of its blank female can pick out a male of her own kind without ever seeing him.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
選択肢 A:own, a(正解)
後ろの a female can pick out a male of her own kind という主節とは、コンマでつなぎます。
B:own; a
C:own. A
D:own: a
because・although・when・if などで始まる subordinate clause(従属節)は、それだけでは文になりません。
When a graphic design firm of about eighty employees tried a four-day workweek for six months, staff kept their full salaries but worked only Monday through Thursday. Operations manager Leticia Amadi expected output to fall and watched every project closely. Instead, client deadlines were met as often as before, and something else changed as well: the number of sick days that employees took during the six-month blank nearly 40 percent lower than in the same months a year earlier.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:trial, was
B:trial; was
主語は the number of sick days から trial までの長いまとまりで、動詞は was です。
D:trial—was
After a light rain falls on dry ground, many people notice an earthy smell in the air. Much of that smell comes from geosmin, which bacteria in the soil give off. A breeze can carry the smell to people nearby, but first the geosmin has to get out of the soil and into the air. Engineers who made slow-motion videos of water drops hitting dry soil have found one way that may happen. In those videos, tiny bubbles can form inside a drop soon after it lands, and they pop as soon as they reach the top of the drop. The air in these bubbles comes from the small gaps between soil grains, where it stays until water soaking in pushes it out. The spray from each popping bubble blank geosmin up off the ground, along with other substances from the soil.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:carry
B:are carrying
選択肢 C:carries(正解)
正解。主語は The spray で、from each popping bubble は、しぶきがどこから出るかを説明しているだけです。
D:have carried
In the crowded industrial cities of the 1800s, a thirsty worker could not always find clean water to drink, but he could almost always find a saloon. Temperance societies, which urged people to give up alcohol, decided that speeches and pamphlets alone would not solve this problem. So in the second half of the century, these groups blank public drinking fountains on busy street corners, beside factory gates, and outside railway stations, where anyone could drink for free.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:will install
in the second half of the century
選択肢 B:installed(正解)
正解。in the second half of the century
C:are installing
D:install
Many silent letters in English were once pronounced, but a few were never spoken at all. In the 1300s, the word now spelled debt was usually written dette, much as it had been in the French from which English borrowed it. Scholars of the 1400s and 1500s, eager to show that the word ultimately came from the Latin blank a b that English speakers had never pronounced. Early printers made changes of their own: the h in ghost is often traced to typesetters who had learned their trade in Flanders.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:debitum—inserted
B:debitum; inserted
C:debitum inserted
選択肢 D:debitum, inserted(正解)
In the nineteenth century, many novels reached the public not as complete books but as weekly installments in inexpensive magazines. This way of publishing shaped the stories themselves. Because a magazine earned its money one issue at a time, writers learned to end each installment at a moment of suspense—a letter left unopened, a knock at the door, a bridge about to give way—so that readers would buy the next issue to find out what happened. Editors could tell when the strategy had worked: after an especially tense ending, hundreds of blank might reach a magazine’s office within days, mailed from towns across the country and all asking what would happen next.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:reader’s letters
選択肢 B:readers’ letters(正解)
C:readers letter’s
D:readers’ letter’s
apostrophe(アポストロフィ)は、名詞を plural(複数形)にする記号ではありません。
Many violets depend on ants to carry their seeds away from the parent plant. The fatty tip attached to each seed, a small structure called an elaiosome that ants prize for the oils it contains, blank as payment for this service. Once a seed is inside the nest, the fatty tip becomes food for the colony’s larvae, while the hard seed itself is left uneaten. Workers later move the bare seed to the pile where the colony dumps its waste, and this nutrient-rich spot gives it a good place to sprout.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:serving
B:which serves
選択肢 C:serves(正解)
D:serve
英語の文には、subject(主語)に合った main verb(述語動詞)が一つ必要です。
Richmond, Virginia, and Columbia, South Carolina, both stand beside rapids, where each city’s river drops from hilly, rocky ground onto the low, flat plain that runs to the sea. Boats coming inland from the ocean could not get past that rough water, so their cargo was unloaded and traded there. blank the falling water could spin waterwheels that powered machines for grinding grain into flour and sawing logs into boards. With a place to trade and a source of power side by side, settlers had two good reasons to build there.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:Instead,
B:For example,
D:Therefore,
Comedians who are new to the stage often fear silence. Worried that the audience will lose interest, they hurry from the setup of a joke straight to its punch line. blank experienced performers often let a brief pause hang in the air just before the punch line. That moment of quiet gives listeners time to guess how the joke will end, so the real ending arrives as more of a surprise, which, many comedians say, draws bigger laughs.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:For example,
B:Similarly,
D:As a result,
as a result は「その結果」です。
When a male panther chameleon faces another male, green areas of its skin can turn yellow or orange. Biologists who examined these lizards’ skin in 2015 traced the shift to something the animal can rearrange inside it. blank certain skin cells are packed with tiny crystals set out in a neat, evenly spaced pattern, and the lizard can widen the gaps between them. Wider gaps make the crystals bounce back redder light, so the green areas turn yellow or orange.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:Similarly,
B:However,
C:For this reason,
for this reason は「そのため」です。
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- In the 1880s, the Paris police began identifying repeat offenders with a system invented by Alphonse Bertillon, a clerk in their records office.
- For each person arrested, a clerk recorded eleven body measurements, such as the length of the head and of the left foot, on a card.
- Taking the measurements required special calipers and careful training, and two clerks measuring the same person could get slightly different results.
- A set of fingerprints could be taken in a few minutes with only ink and paper.
- In 1901, London’s police began filing fingerprint cards in place of measurement cards.
The student wants to point out an advantage that fingerprint cards had over measurement cards. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:In the 1880s, the Paris police began using a system invented by records clerk Alphonse Bertillon to identify repeat offenders.
B:Bertillon’s cards recorded eleven body measurements for each person arrested, such as the length of the head and of the left foot.
C:In 1901, London’s police began filing fingerprint cards in place of the measurement cards that clerks had filled out before.
D:While measurements required special calipers and careful training, fingerprints could be taken in a few minutes with only ink and paper.(正解)
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- In 1943, a new kind of playground opened in Emdrup, a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark.
- Children there played with scrap wood, bricks, old tires, and simple tools, using them to build their own huts and towers.
- Its designer, landscape architect Carl Theodor Sørensen, had noticed that children often preferred playing on building sites and in junkyards to playing in tidy playgrounds.
- In 1946, the British landscape architect Lady Allen of Hurtwood visited Emdrup and then campaigned to bring the idea to Britain.
- Over the next several years, similar playgrounds, which the British called “adventure playgrounds,” appeared on London lots left empty by wartime bombing.
The student wants to explain how the idea behind the Emdrup playground reached London. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:Carl Theodor Sørensen designed the Emdrup playground after noticing that children often preferred building sites and junkyards to tidy playgrounds.
B:After visiting the Emdrup playground in 1946, Lady Allen of Hurtwood campaigned to bring the idea to Britain, where similar playgrounds appeared in London.(正解)
C:In the years after the war, playgrounds known as adventure playgrounds appeared in London on lots that wartime bombing had left empty.
D:At the Emdrup playground, which opened in 1943, children used scrap wood, bricks, old tires, and tools to build their own huts and towers.
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- A peat bog is a wetland where dead plants pile up faster than they break down, slowly forming thick layers of peat.
- Peatlands cover only about 3 percent of Earth’s land, yet they hold roughly a third of the carbon stored in the world’s soils.
- Sphagnum mosses, the main plants in many bogs, take up minerals such as calcium from the water and release hydrogen ions in exchange.
- This exchange makes bog water strongly acidic.
- Most of the bacteria and fungi that break down dead plants work poorly in acidic, waterlogged conditions, so much of the carbon in the dead moss stays locked in the peat.
- When a bog is drained for farming, air reaches the peat, decay speeds up, and stored carbon escapes as carbon dioxide.
The student wants to explain how sphagnum mosses help bogs store carbon, for an audience that does not know what a peat bog is. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:Sphagnum mosses take up calcium from bog water and release hydrogen ions in exchange; the acid this makes slows the bacteria and fungi that break down dead plants, so much of the plants’ carbon stays locked in the peat.
B:A peat bog is a wetland where thick layers of peat slowly form from dead plants, and in many bogs, sphagnum mosses release hydrogen ions that make the water strongly acidic.
C:In many peat bogs, wetlands where dead plants pile up as thick layers of peat, sphagnum mosses make the water acidic; this slows the bacteria and fungi that cause decay, so much of the plants’ carbon stays in the peat.(正解)
D:A peat bog is a wetland where dead plants pile up faster than they break down, and peatlands, though they cover only about 3 percent of Earth’s land, hold roughly a third of all soil carbon.
The following text is from a story.
Eszter Horvath was seventeen when she took the job behind the counter of the village post office, and she soon discovered that half the work was reading. Many of the older villagers had never learned their letters, so they brought their correspondence to her window to hear it read aloud, and at first Eszter raced through each page, impatient to return to her sorting. But one morning, as she read old Mr. Benedek a letter from his grandson, she noticed his lips silently shaping each word a moment after she pronounced it, and from then on she read more blank, pausing at the end of every line so that he could keep up.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
A:hastily
選択肢 B:deliberately(正解)
C:cheerfully
D:reluctantly
For generations, traders in the markets of Ibadan, in southwestern Nigeria, have pooled their savings through rotating clubs known as esusu. Each member contributes an identical sum to a common fund at every meeting, and at each meeting one member, in an order fixed in advance, collects the entire fund. Because no written contract bound the members, a trader who had already received the fund could, in principle, simply stop contributing; few did. Every member had an interest in seeing the cycle through: those still waiting needed their payout, and those already paid wanted a place in the next cycle, which no club would extend to someone known to have defected.
As used in the text, what does the word “interest” most nearly mean?
A:curiosity
B:fee
選択肢 C:stake(正解)
D:enthusiasm
Accounts of wayang kulit, the shadow-puppet theater of Java, tend to dwell on the stamina of the dalang. From evening until dawn, this single puppeteer sits cross-legged behind a lamp-lit screen, working dozens of flat leather puppets and speaking for every one of them. Yet the task is arguably less tiring than it is blank. Javanese is spoken at different levels of politeness depending on the relative rank of speaker and listener, so the dalang must know, at every exchange, who outranks whom: a servant addresses a prince in elaborate courtly forms, and the prince answers in plain speech. An audience that has heard the story many times will notice a single slip.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
A:strenuous
選択肢 B:exacting(正解)
C:spontaneous
D:hierarchical
less tiring than it is ○○ は「つかれるというより、むしろ○○だ」という意味です。
To anyone who has watched candles burn only on Earth, the teardrop shape of a flame seems as much a part of fire as its heat. It is better understood as an artifact of gravity. Gravity pulls the cool, dense air around a candle downward, and as that air sinks, it pushes the lighter, hotter gases of the flame upward, stretching the flame into a point and drawing fresh oxygen in from below. Aboard an orbiting spacecraft, where hot gases have no tendency to rise, a candle flame instead forms a small sphere and, fed only by oxygen that slowly drifts toward it, burns dimmer and bluer than it would on Earth.
As used in the text, what does the word “artifact” most nearly mean?
A:relic
B:error
error(まちがい)は合いません。
選択肢 C:by-product(正解)
D:instrument
The following text is from a poem.
Old stairs, you will outlast every one of uswho learned your voices in the dark. The thirdtread still groans the way it groaned beneathmy grandfather, who labored up you late at night, one hand on the banister, the other pressed to his side.
The sixth still utters the brief complaint it madefor my mother, two at a time at twentyand one at a time at seventy, pausing there.
The ninth my brother learned to step over at midnightso you would not betray him. And Ihave climbed you with a lantern, then a child, and now with a carton of things I cannot keep.
[underlined begins] Tomorrow strangers own you. Teach them nothing. [underlined ends]Or no: teach them the third tread and the sixth, and let them learn, as we did, year by year, which of you will speak and which will keep a secret.
Which choice best describes the function of the underlined portion in the text as a whole?
A:It reveals that the house is about to pass to new owners and makes a request that the speaker withdraws in the next line.(正解)
B:It states a firm resolution about the stairs that the final lines of the poem go on to explain and justify.
C:It expresses the speaker’s anger at the relatives who arranged to sell the family house to strangers.
D:It suggests that the new owners plan to repair the stairs so that the steps will no longer creak.
Once a year in the Swiss cantons of Glarus and Appenzell Innerrhoden, citizens gather in an open square to pass laws and elect officials by a show of hands, a custom known as the Landsgemeinde. The hands are usually not counted; the presiding official looks out over the crowd and declares which side has prevailed. Visitors accustomed to private voting booths are often struck by what the assembly lacks: there is no secret ballot, so neighbors, relatives, and employers can all see how each citizen votes. Historian Corinne Aebi accepts this description but not the verdict usually attached to it. The openness, she argues, is deliberate: a decision reached in full view of the community binds the losing side more firmly than an anonymous tally could, since everyone has watched the majority take shape.
Which choice best describes the overall structure of the text?
A:It describes a voting custom, identifies a feature that outsiders tend to regard as a flaw, and then presents a view that treats that feature as intended and valuable.(正解)
B:It describes a voting custom, identifies a feature that outsiders tend to regard as a flaw, and then presents evidence that outsiders have misdescribed that feature.
C:It explains how a voting custom arose, traces its decline in most Swiss cantons, and then considers whether it can survive in the two cantons that still practice it.
D:It presents a historian’s defense of a voting custom, describes how votes are judged at the assembly, and then raises a problem that the defense leaves unanswered.
Text 1
Musicologist Aurelio Mancini traces the fade-out, a fixture of pop records in the mid-twentieth century, to the economics of the recording studio. Many songs of that era rested on a repeating chorus with no composed ending, and devising, rehearsing, and recording a clean conclusion consumed studio time that producers would rather not pay for. Letting the track sink slowly into silence while the chorus went on repeating was, Mancini argues, simply the cheapest way to stop.
Text 2
Siobhan Keane, a scholar of popular music, observes that many performers who faded out their records played full, carefully rehearsed endings to the same songs onstage, so for them an ending already existed. What their records gave up, Keane suggests, they gave up on purpose: by withholding the final chord, a fade denies a song formal resolution, an openness these performers evidently prized.
Based on the texts, how would Keane most likely respond to Mancini’s explanation of the fade-out?
A:She would argue that it does not account for performers who already had endings for their songs but chose not to record them.(正解)
B:She would agree that fade-outs saved studio time but add that they also let radio hosts talk over the end of a song.
C:She would contend that songs built on a repeating chorus were less common in that period than Mancini assumes.
D:She would say that performers faded out their records because the endings they played on stage were too loose to record well.
Each autumn, the floor of a temperate forest disappears under a layer of fallen leaves, yet by the following summer much of that layer is gone. A large share of it has been carried off by earthworms. On damp nights, certain species stretch out of their burrows, grip a leaf by its tip, and drag it down into the soil, where it softens for several days before they eat it. The worms later leave the digested remains behind as small, dark castings. Over many years, these castings accumulate into a fine, crumbly layer, so that the worms, one leaf at a time, slowly build up the very soil they live in.
Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
A:Earthworms eat fallen leaves only after the leaves have softened underground for several days.
B:By dragging fallen leaves underground and leaving the digested remains as castings, earthworms gradually build up soil.(正解)
C:Fallen leaves vanish from forest floors by summer mainly because the wind carries them away from the trees.
D:Earthworms leave their burrows on damp nights mainly to search for safer places to live.
For centuries, mule caravans carried tea from the hills of southwestern China over high mountain passes to the Tibetan Plateau. The tea traveled pressed into dense bricks that survived rain and rough handling, and on the plateau, where few crops grow, it became a daily staple. Most accounts of the route have centered on the official exchange it served: government agencies traded tea for highland horses, which Chinese armies needed. Historian Weiping Lu, however, has studied the account books of merchant families who ran caravans in the nineteenth century. Horses appear in them only now and then; far more often, the books record wool, hides and medicinal herbs heading downhill, and bricks of tea handed over for lodging, fodder and porters’ wages. In Lu’s view, the route was kept alive less by the demand for horses than by countless small deals in which tea itself served as money.
Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
A:Lu’s study of merchant records indicates that, by the nineteenth century, merchant families rather than government agencies controlled the exchange of tea for horses.
B:Account books kept by nineteenth-century caravan families mention wool, hides and medicinal herbs far more often than they mention horses.
C:Government agencies turned tea into a kind of money on the plateau so that they could obtain the horses that Chinese armies needed.
D:Lu’s study of merchant records suggests that the route depended less on the trade in horses than on many everyday exchanges in which tea was used as payment.(正解)
less A than B を「AよりBが少ない」と読むと、意味が逆になります。
The following text is from a story.
When the developer first offered to buy the orchard, the whole valley expected my great-aunt Philippa to sell. Her apple trees were over sixty years old, their harvests had been shrinking for a decade, and she was well into her eighties. She turned down that offer and every larger one that followed, and no one in the family could explain why. Having spent her last summer in the orchard working beside her, I came to believe that her refusal was an act of loyalty: she thought of the trees less as property than as companions who had stood by her all her life, and she would not desert them now.
Which quotation from the story most effectively illustrates the claim?
A:“She told the developer’s agent that she had never once let a stranger make up her mind for her, and that she was far too old to begin now.”
B:“When the oldest tree split in a storm, she would not let us cut it down; she propped up the limb and said a tree that had fed us for sixty years deserved better than an axe.”(正解)
C:“Each evening she wrote the day’s sales in a ledger, and she liked to remind us that the orchard still earned enough to pay its own taxes.”
D:“She kept my great-uncle’s pruning saw on a hook beside the kitchen door, oiled and sharp, and she never let anyone else touch it.”
From 1970 to 2020, design historian Nkechi Adebayo returned every ten years to Harrow Lane, a busy market street, to count the signs above its shopfronts, noting whether each had been painted by hand or printed by machine. For decades, printed signs, which cost less and could be made in a day, steadily took the place of painted ones. Adebayo claims, however, that this shift partly reversed in the last decade of her study, as shop owners hoping to stand out from nearby chain stores began hiring sign painters again.
Shop Signs on Harrow Lane, 1970–2020
Which choice most effectively uses data from the graph to support Adebayo’s claim?
A:In 2020, there were 35 printed signs on Harrow Lane, compared with only 20 hand-painted signs.
B:From 1970 to 1990, the number of hand-painted signs fell from 50 to 25, while the number of printed signs rose from 5 to 30.
C:From 2010 to 2020, the number of hand-painted signs rose from 10 to 20, while the number of printed signs fell from 45 to 35.(正解)
D:From 2000 to 2010, the number of hand-painted signs rose from 15 to 20, while the number of printed signs fell from 40 to 35.
On high-desert ranchland in the western United States, many creeks shrink to a trickle by late summer, and the grasses and shrubs along their banks turn brown. Beaver dams slow the flow of such creeks and spread water across the ground beside them. Hydrologist Tove Lindqvist measured conditions late in the dry season along three creeks, each with one stretch where beavers had built dams and one stretch without dams. Because the two stretches of a creek share the same soil and weather, she compared each stretch with dams only to the stretch without dams on the same creek. Lindqvist claims that beaver dams keep groundwater nearer the surface, which in turn keeps more of the land beside a creek green.
| Creek | Stretch | Depth to groundwater (m) | Green plant cover (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aspen Creek | With dams | 0.4 | 82 |
| Aspen Creek | Without dams | 0.9 | 52 |
| Coyote Creek | With dams | 0.7 | 66 |
| Coyote Creek | Without dams | 1.8 | 27 |
| Sage Creek | With dams | 1.4 | 41 |
| Sage Creek | Without dams | 2.6 | 12 |
Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to support Lindqvist’s claim?
A:Along Coyote Creek, groundwater was 0.7 meters below the surface in the stretch with dams and 1.8 meters below it in the stretch without dams, and plant cover was 66 and 27 percent, respectively.(正解)
B:Along Sage Creek, green plant cover was 41 percent in the stretch with dams, compared with only 12 percent in the stretch without dams.
C:Groundwater was 0.9 meters below the surface in the stretch of Aspen Creek without dams and 1.4 meters below it in the stretch of Sage Creek with dams, and plant cover was 52 and 41 percent, respectively.
D:Along Aspen Creek, groundwater was 0.9 meters below the surface in the stretch with dams and 0.4 meters below it in the stretch without dams, and plant cover was 82 and 52 percent, respectively.
Module 2(難しいほう) 問13 Inferences(論理的に文を完成させる)・ふつう
People tend to recognize the faces of strangers near their own age more accurately than the faces of strangers who are much older or younger, a pattern known as the own-age bias. One explanation is that the bias comes from experience: most adults spend their days mainly among people of about their own age and so get more practice telling such faces apart. Psychologist Rafaela Quispe tested face recognition among shop workers in their twenties. Workers at clothing shops aimed at young adults showed the usual bias, recognizing young faces far better than older ones. But workers of the same age at pharmacies whose customers were mostly retirees recognized older faces nearly as well as young ones. These results suggest that blank
Which choice most logically completes the text?
A:spending time among older people can lead young adults to recognize older faces more accurately than faces near their own age.
B:the own-age bias disappears in anyone whose job involves meeting members of the public.
C:the pharmacy workers had chosen their jobs because they preferred the company of older people.
D:how accurately people recognize faces of a given age depends partly on how often they see such faces.(正解)
nearly as well as nearly as well as
Module 2(難しいほう) 問14 Inferences(論理的に文を完成させる)・むずかしい
Many readers of detective novels expect them to follow a fair-play rule: every clue the detective uses to solve the crime must be shown to the reader before the solution is revealed. The rule exists so that readers have a genuine chance to solve the mystery themselves. Literary scholar Folake Oyelaran points out, however, that the rule as usually stated covers only the facts of the case—the objects, remarks and events within the story—and says nothing about the general knowledge needed to interpret them. Consider a novel in which a suspect claims, in the first chapter, to have seen a certain flower open at noon, and in which the detective later exposes the lie because that kind of flower opens only after dark, a point of botany the novel never states. By Oyelaran’s reasoning, such a novel blank
Which choice most logically completes the text?
A:would break the rule as usually stated, since the flower’s habit of opening only after dark is a clue the detective relies on.
B:would break the rule as usually stated, since readers do not learn of the suspect’s claim until the solution is revealed.
C:could follow the rule as usually stated while still leaving readers without a genuine chance to solve the mystery.(正解)
D:would give readers a genuine chance to solve the mystery, since the suspect’s claim appears early in the story.
The bubbles in a glass of soda seldom form in the middle of the liquid. Gathering dissolved carbon dioxide into a brand-new bubble takes more energy than the drink can easily supply, so the gas needs somewhere to start. Tiny scratches in the glass, specks of dust, and fibers left behind by a dish towel all blank small pockets of air, and carbon dioxide seeps into these pockets until they swell into bubbles and break free. That is why streams of bubbles often rise from the same few spots.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
選択肢 A:trap(正解)
正解。Tiny scratches …, specks of dust, and fibers …
B:trapping
C:to trap
D:having trapped
A returning boomerang is thrown with its arms spinning in a nearly upright plane, and each arm is shaped like a small airplane wing. As the boomerang spins, the arm at the top of the circle moves forward in the direction of flight while the arm at the bottom moves backward, so the top arm meets the air at a higher speed. Because lift grows with airspeed, the top arm is pushed harder than the bottom blank imbalance that would simply topple an object that was not spinning. In a spinning object, however, such a push causes a slow turn instead, as it does in a tilted spinning top, and the boomerang’s path gradually bends into a loop that leads back to the thrower.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:arm; an
an imbalance that …
an imbalance that would simply topple …
C:arm. An
ピリオドで区切ると An imbalance that …
D:arm an
や a change that …
In 1792, Dominique-Jean Larrey, a young surgeon with the French army, was troubled by what happened to soldiers wounded in battle. Army rules kept the medical wagons far behind the lines, and by the time the fighting stopped and the wagons could reach the field, many of the injured blank there for a day or more. Larrey’s answer was the flying ambulance, a light carriage on springs, drawn by horses, that could dash onto the field while the battle was still going on and carry the wounded back to the surgeons.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:have waited
B:wait
選択肢 C:had waited(正解)
正解。by the time the fighting stopped
D:will have waited
In the 1800s, women who climbed in the Alps faced a hazard that their male companions did not: the long skirts that respectable dress then required. The skirts—made of heavy wool, apt to catch on rock, and often stiff with frozen snow by blank could turn a narrow ledge into a real danger. Some climbers found a quiet solution. As soon as they were out of sight of the villages below, they took the skirts off and climbed on in the trousers they had worn underneath, then put the skirts back on before coming down.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:midday,
選択肢 B:midday;
semicolon(セミコロン)は完全な節どうしをつなぐ記号です。
C:midday
by midday could turn
A pidgin is a simple language that forms when people who share no language must trade or work side by side. Because no one speaks it from birth, it usually has few words and few firm rules. When children grow up hearing a pidgin at home, however, their speech soon becomes fuller and more regular than the pidgin their parents use, and within a generation or two a new native language, called a creole, has taken shape. Linguists have long wondered how children manage to build a complete grammar out of such thin blank answer that many of them now accept is that children do not simply copy what they hear but also fill in what is missing.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:material? One
Linguists have long wondered how children manage … 「?」を使うのは How do children manage …?
B:material, one
One answer that many of them now accept is that … コンマだけでつなぐと comma splice(コンマだけで文をつなぐ誤り)になります。
選択肢 C:material. One(正解)
後ろの One answer … is that …
D:material one
asked how …
Choreographer Anneke Dijkstra rarely works in a theater. Her pieces are performed in train stations, covered markets, and bus depots, and the audience is whoever happens to be passing through. When a piece begins, there seems to be nothing to watch: scattered through the crowd blank her dancers, dressed in ordinary clothes and carrying shopping bags or briefcases. Only when one of them stops in the middle of a busy concourse and begins, very slowly, to lean backward do the people nearby realize that a performance has started.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
選択肢 A:is
選択肢 B:are(正解)
正解。この文は倒置で、scattered through the crowd が前に出て、主語 her dancers が動詞の後ろに来ています。
C:has been
D:was
これを inversion(倒置)といいます。
In 2017, biologists studying anole lizards on two small islands in the West Indies happened to measure dozens of the animals only days before two powerful hurricanes struck in quick succession. When the team returned several weeks later, the lizards that had survived turned out to have toe pads that were, on average, noticeably larger than those of the lizards measured before the storms. Because anoles cling to bark and foliage by means of adhesive pads on their toes, the researchers interpreted this difference as evidence that the blank on a branch, made firmer by those larger pads, was part of what had kept them from being blown away by winds strong enough to strip trees of their leaves.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A:survivor’s grip
B:survivors grip
C:survivors’ grips
When photography first spread in the 1840s, a portrait could require the sitter to hold perfectly still for as long as a minute. A smile is hard to keep steady for that long, and one that slipped would leave a blur. By the 1860s, newer methods had cut the time to a few seconds. blank sitters in portraits from that decade still rarely smiled; most followed an older custom, carried over from painted portraits, in which a serious face showed dignity.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:As a result,
as a result は「その結果」です。
B:For example,
選択肢 C:Even so,(正解)
D:In addition,
Module 2(難しいほう) 問23 Transitions(接続語)・ふつう
Many people who admire a bonsai assume that it belongs to a naturally tiny kind of tree. blank most bonsai are common species, such as junipers, pines, and maples, that would grow to full height if planted in open ground. What keeps each one small is the grower’s patience: over years or even decades, the grower trims its roots and shoots and wraps wire around its branches, slowly bending them until the little tree takes on the look of an ancient one.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:Indeed,
B:For example,
C:Similarly,
People who move to the Tibetan Plateau from low elevations typically adjust to its thin air by producing extra red blood cells, which carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Tibetans whose ancestors have lived on the plateau for thousands of years mostly lack this response: their red blood cell counts stay close to those of people living near sea level. They make up the difference by breathing faster and more deeply, even at rest. blank rather than packing extra oxygen into each drop of blood, Tibetans keep their ordinary blood well supplied by moving more air through their lungs.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A:For example,
B:Nevertheless,
選択肢 C:In other words,(正解)
D:Similarly,
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- In medieval Europe, many Christians made pilgrimages, long journeys to shrines connected with holy figures.
- Sellers at popular shrines offered pilgrim badges, small souvenirs cast from a cheap mix of tin and lead.
- Because the badges could be made quickly in large numbers using stone molds, most pilgrims could afford one.
- Pilgrims pinned the badges to their hats or cloaks, showing others which shrines they had visited.
- Badges sold at the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury, England, often showed the archbishop’s head.
- Thousands of these badges have been recovered from the mud along riverbanks in London and in Dutch cities.
The student wants to introduce pilgrim badges to an audience unfamiliar with them. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:Badges sold at the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury, England, often showed the head of the archbishop honored there.
B:Pilgrim badges were cheap metal souvenirs that medieval pilgrims bought at shrines and pinned to their hats or cloaks.(正解)
C:Because they could be cast quickly in stone molds, pilgrim badges were made in large numbers and cost little.
D:Thousands of pilgrim badges have been recovered from the mud along riverbanks in London and in several Dutch cities.
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- Medieval European world maps of the kind now known as T-O maps were not used to plan journeys; they show neither accurate distances nor true coastlines.
- Each one presents the known world as a single circle: strips of water inside it form a T, and a ring of ocean running along its edge forms the O.
- The stem and crossbar of the T mark off three landmasses, with Europe below the crossbar on the left, Africa below it on the right, and Asia, the largest of the three, spread over everything above it.
- Asia holds that upper position because the maps are oriented to the east: the direction that sits on the right side of a typical modern map is placed at the top of the circle instead.
- Many later T-O maps place Jerusalem, which their makers saw as the spiritual center of the world, at the exact center of the circle.
The student wants to emphasize that T-O maps were shaped by religious belief rather than by the needs of travelers. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:On a T-O map, a T-shaped band of water divides the known world into Asia, Europe, and Africa, with east placed at the top of the circle.
B:T-O maps show neither accurate distances nor true coastlines, and people in the Middle Ages did not use them to plan journeys.
C:Many later T-O maps place Jerusalem, which their makers saw as the spiritual center of the world, at the exact center of the circle.
D:T-O maps were not used to plan journeys; many instead centered on Jerusalem, which their makers saw as the world’s spiritual center.(正解)
While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
- Most hermit crab species protect their abdomen, which lacks the hard covering found on the front of the body, by living inside empty snail shells, and because a shell cannot grow with its occupant, a crab must trade up to a roomier one from time to time.
- In some species, several crabs that come upon a vacant shell too large for any of them will stay and wait beside it rather than moving on.
- While they wait, the crabs form a line, and their sizes generally decrease from the front of that line to the back.
- The swaps are set off by a latecomer whose body does fit the vacant shell: once it moves in, the crab at the front of the line takes over the shell the latecomer has left behind, and from then on each shell that is given up moves one place toward the back.
- Since shell size generally tracks body size, larger crabs tend to occupy larger shells.
The student wants to explain how the waiting crabs benefit from arranging themselves by size. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
A:After congregating at a vacant shell that is too large for all of them, the crabs arrange themselves in a line ordered roughly from largest to smallest and wait there together.
B:Once a crab whose body fits the vacant shell moves in, shells pass from one crab to the next down the line, so a single vacant shell can end up providing new shells for several crabs.
C:Because a growing hermit crab gradually outgrows its shell, it must periodically relocate to a larger one, and larger crabs tend to occupy larger shells than smaller crabs do.
D:Since the crabs line up roughly from largest to smallest, each one usually moves into a shell left by a bigger crab, and therefore into a larger shell than its own.(正解)
