The composer Ilse Brandt opens her second symphony by asking eight brass players to hold unrelated notes at full volume for a full minute before the strings enter. Audiences at the premiere were not charmed. One listener wrote afterward that the opening was not music at all but a — sixty seconds she endured with her hands pressed over her ears.

When the botanist Margery Ruel died in 1908, her former student Theo Lind published twelve lines in her memory. Several composers asked to set the words to music; Lind refused every request, insisting that the lines be read in silence rather than sung. The was nonetheless reprinted in nearly every scientific journal of the decade, and Lind never published another line of verse.

A textbook publisher hired an anonymous writer to compress Vasili Orlan's nine-hundred-page novel into ninety pages for twelve-year-olds. The rewrite is plainly sincere — no joke is attempted anywhere in it, and the writer seems to have admired the book — yet Orlan's most careful scenes come out clumsy and false, and characters who had taken him decades to build are reduced to one trait apiece. Reviewers called the slim classroom edition a and urged teachers to assign the original instead.
