01
In 1962, photographic conservation was as a specialty: the first program to train anyone in it had opened only two years before. Its early practitioners were not improvising, however. They worked from a written protocol and a vocabulary borrowed intact from paper conservation, so the field's procedures were settled well before its reputation was.
本文は the field's procedures were settled well before its reputation was と述べ、手順はすでに固まっていたと言っているので、形が定まっていないという含みと矛盾します。

Marguerite Ellery's first article, on the exchange of nutrients between roots and soil bacteria, appeared in 1927 in a journal read mostly by agronomists. Within two decades every laboratory in microbial ecology traced its own methods back to those fourteen pages; the discipline as it is now practiced did not exist before them. Historians of science therefore call the article .
seminal the discipline as it is now practiced did not exist before them(この論文以前にはその分野が存在しなかった)とあります。

The interstate interchanges built across the Midwest in the 1950s were justified almost entirely by the cost of moving freight. Once in place, though, they began to a pattern of settlement that no planner had forecast: warehouses appeared first at the exits, then housing, then schools, and by 1975 several of these clusters held more people than the towns the highways had been routed to serve.
しかしこの文では何かが止まるどころか「warehouses appeared first at the exits, then housing, then schools」と次々に増え、「by 1975 several of these clusters held more people than the towns the highways had been routed to serve」とまで書かれています。
engender 空欄の直後は「a pattern of settlement that no planner had forecast」で、その中身は「warehouses appeared first at the exits, then housing, then schools」という、何もなかった出口周辺に新しい集落が次々と現れていく流れです。
しかしこの settlement pattern は「a pattern of settlement that no planner had forecast」と、誰も予想していなかった結果として書かれ、しかも「by 1975」まで時間をかけて育っています。

Hilda Ferrant painted the same stretch of tidal marsh from 1948 to 1971, each canvas larger and less literal than the one before. Visitors who met the room-sized final panel on its own often called it forbidding. Those who had worked through the sequence in order saw instead that every earlier canvas had been a rehearsal for this one, and read the panel as the of the entire project.
culmination every earlier canvas had been a rehearsal for this one(それまでの全作品がこの一枚のための予行だった)とあります。
