01
The timing of the 2011 transit was settled a decade in advance. Okonkwo's team computed the hour at which the planet would cross the star's disk, booked the mountaintop telescope for exactly that window, and left nothing about the schedule to chance or to the reading of signs. What remained was a question of weather: the night itself had to be — dark, cloudless, and long enough to record the whole crossing — for the measurement they had already designed.
auspicious auspicious は「これから良いことが起きそうだ」と兆しが告げている状態を指す語ですが、この文章は「left nothing about the schedule to chance or to the reading of signs」と、兆しを読むやり方をはっきり退けています。空所に求められているのは吉兆ではなく「dark, cloudless, and long enough to record the whole crossing」という実際の観測条件なので合いません。
fortuitous fortuitous は「たまたま幸運に起きた」という偶然を表しますが、この文章は「left nothing about the schedule to chance」と偶然を排除しています。
夜が未来を知ることはありませんし、先を読んだのは「settled a decade in advance」と計画した Okonkwo's team のほうで、空所は「What remained was a question of weather」で示された天候の条件を述べる場所です。
propitious 「What remained was a question of weather」に続き、夜が「dark, cloudless, and long enough to record the whole crossing」であること、しかもそれが「for the measurement they had already designed」=すでに設計済みの観測にとって都合が良いことが求められています。

Between 1590 and 1720 the Baltic grain trade boomed, collapsed, and boomed again, twice within a single decade in the worst years. Kirsanova's study of the Danzig ledgers argues that the houses that lasted were not the ones that foresaw each — no one did — but the ones that kept enough idle capital to sit out whatever came next.

Working from nothing but the shipping registers that any clerk in the port could consult, Hartnell argued in 1926 that the region's grain economy would collapse within five years. It collapsed in 1930. Later historians have called him , though he always insisted that he had no gift beyond patience with columns of figures.

The flood ledgers kept at the Deshi monastery record the level of the courtyard well for nearly four centuries. A sudden drop is noted again and again in the same terms — as — and the monks were not being fanciful: in eleven of the thirteen recorded cases, the valley's springs failed within a single season. Hydrologists now read the ledgers as an unusually long record of groundwater behavior.
ominous 水位が下がったあとに "the valley's springs failed within a single season" と災いが続くので、悪いことの前触れを示す ominous が入ります。
