01
In her final year at the teachers' college, the reformer Mattie Owens held no office and could impose no penalty on anyone who ignored her; her authority was entirely that of the platform. She never pleaded with anyone and never asked a favor. Witnesses describe her leaning over the lectern, her voice rising until it filled the hall, to the young instructors to carry free evening classes into the mill towns — pressing them not for her own sake, but for the sake of children she would never meet.
本文は「She never pleaded with anyone and never asked a favor.」と懇願を明確に否定し、さらに彼女が動いたのは「not for her own sake, but for the sake of children she would never meet」と自分のためではないと書いています。
本文は「held no office and could impose no penalty on anyone who ignored her」と、無視されても罰を与える力がないと述べており、脅す手段がありません。
exhort 演壇から「her voice rising until it filled the hall」と声を張り上げ、しかも「pressing them not for her own sake, but for the sake of children she would never meet」と相手や子どもたちのために強く促しています。これが exhort(強く勧める)です。

For eleven years the machinist Julian Prade could not build a single engine of his own design. A contract he had signed at nineteen assigned every improvement he might ever make to his former employer, and the courts upheld it in full. Prade wanted nothing more than to work, and no fear of loss ever cooled that wish. The agreement did not merely slow him; its effect was to him completely, and the engines he sketched in those years exist only on paper.
しかし "no fear of loss ever cooled that wish" とあり、彼は作りたい気持ちを失っていません。
did not merely slow him" が「遅らせただけではない」と正面から否定しています。

The state charter drafted in 1817 contains a single clause whose effect lasted a century. Before any territorial legislature had met, before any banker had petitioned, the clause barred those bodies from ever granting a bank charter: the question could not be introduced, debated, or voted on at all. Later reformers complained that the framers had not waited to defeat such proposals as they arose, nor put down the agitation that followed them, but had chosen to them from the outset.
文中で "nor put down the agitation that followed them" と別の行為として並べられ、否定されています。

When Ines Barros announced her plan to winter alone on the ice shelf, no rule stood in her way; the institute, which had no hold on her funding, threatened nothing and forbade nothing. Danger had never moved her, and nothing she read that autumn frightened her. It was a colleague's letters — three of them, each patiently working through the arithmetic of fuel and daylight — that finally managed to her from going: by the third she had granted the argument and changed her own mind. She spent that winter in Lisbon instead, writing up the data she already had.
本文は「no rule stood in her way」と書き、研究所も「threatened nothing and forbade nothing」でした。
deter deter は恐れや不利益で思いとどまらせる語ですが、本文は「Danger had never moved her, and nothing she read that autumn frightened her.」
dissuade 手紙は「each patiently working through the arithmetic of fuel and daylight」と根気よく数字を追って説明し、その結果「by the third she had granted the argument and changed her own mind」と本人が議論を認めて考えを変えました。
本文では彼女自身が議論に納得して「changed her own mind」となり、「She spent that winter in Lisbon instead」と計画を完全に取りやめています。
