01
When two herbaria both claimed the Patagonian specimens gathered in 1908, their curators braced for years of litigation. Instead, the lawyers drew up a division of the collection that both institutions signed within a month. Historians of botany now cite the settlement as evidence that a dispute over ownership need not harden into a feud: the two curators never became friends, and their letters remained stiffly professional to the end.

Scholars who study polar expedition journals usually hunt for evidence of private friendships, but the diaries kept at the Ross Island station through the winter of 1934 resist that approach. No two men are singled out as inseparable; what the entries record instead is the that ran through all eleven members of the party, sustained by shared chores, shared rations, and a nightly round of songs. The bond was strong, one historian argues, precisely because it belonged to no one pair.
camaraderie 空所には「all eleven members」全員に行き渡り、「it belonged to no one pair」と言われる結びつきが入ります。

Priority disputes in nineteenth-century chemistry were seldom settled gracefully, which is why Hoffmeister's conduct toward Vahl still startles readers. Vahl had circulated Hoffmeister's unpublished notes under his own name, and the older chemist had every ground for protest; yet when the academy asked for his comment, Hoffmeister withdrew his own claim and recommended Vahl for the prize. Colleagues who despised Vahl thought the gesture excessively , though they granted that no kindness lay behind it: Hoffmeister never sought the man's company again and wished him no good fortune, and he said only that the work mattered more than the credit.
ここで評価されているのは「the gesture」という一度の行為であり、しかも「Hoffmeister never sought the man's company again」と、その後は付き合いを断っています。
しかしこの文章は「wished him no good fortune」と、Vahl の幸運を願ってなどいないことをはっきり書き、さらに「no kindness lay behind it」と念を押しています。
magnanimous 自分の未発表ノートを盗用された側なのに、Hoffmeister は「withdrew his own claim and recommended Vahl for the prize」と、相手を責めずに手柄を譲っています。

Visitors to the observatory in the 1890s left oddly divided accounts of its director, Elena Marsh. At receptions for foreign astronomers she was unfailingly : she greeted every guest by name, asked after the journey, and saw the party to the door herself. More than one visitor noticed, though, that nothing in her manner went past what the occasion required — she laughed at no one's joke and volunteered nothing about herself — and her assistants record that she took her meals alone, declined every invitation from the town, and returned to the dome the moment protocol allowed.
この受付の様子は「she laughed at no one's joke and volunteered nothing about herself」であり、決まりきった応対に終始していて、楽しげな賑わいがありません。
cordial 「she greeted every guest by name, asked after the journey, and saw the party to the door herself」と応対は温かく丁重ですが、「nothing in her manner went past what the occasion required」と、その温かさは礼儀が求める範囲ちょうどで止まります。
しかし彼女は「she laughed at no one's joke and volunteered nothing about herself」とあり、しかも「returned to the dome the moment protocol allowed」。
ところが「she took her meals alone, declined every invitation from the town, and returned to the dome the moment protocol allowed」と、人との交わりを自分から避けています。
