Over eleven months of night surveys, Meera Anand's team never once recorded their study animal, a small slow-moving primate, on the forest floor. It feeds, sleeps, and rears its young among the branches, crossing gaps by stretching from one limb to the next rather than leaping or gliding — a thoroughly life that leaves the animal nearly helpless on open ground.
aerial 「空中の」。本文は "rather than leaping or gliding" と明示していて、この動物は枝から枝へ体を伸ばして移動します。空中を飛んだり滑空したりしないので aerial は使えません。

When European crews provisioned the island in the sixteenth century, they set a few pigs ashore and sailed on. Their descendants now number in the thousands and churn up the forest floor as they root for tubers. Biologists who survey the herds are deliberate about calling them : every animal traces back to escaped livestock, not to any population the island carried before the ships came.
arboreal 「樹上の」。本文のブタは "churn up the forest floor as they root for tubers"、つまり地面を掘り返しています。木の上で暮らす動物ではありません。
feral コロンの後の "every animal traces back to escaped livestock" が決め手です。一度家畜化されたものが逃げて野生化した状態を指す feral が、この由来の説明とぴったり一致します。
indigenous 「土着の」。本文は "not to any population the island carried before the ships came" と、船が来る前からいた個体群ではないと明言しています。まさに indigenous を否定する文です。
terrestrial 「陸生の」。確かにブタは陸上にいますが、コロン以下の理由は「逃げた家畜の子孫だ」という由来の説明です。生息場所の語では "are deliberate about calling them"（わざわざそう呼んでいる）理由になりません。

On paper the delta restoration was a two-year job. In practice the engineers spent six years in a of overlapping permits, each review barred from starting until some other agency had closed its own file. Nothing about those years was dramatic; nothing about them moved.
maelstrom 「大渦・激しい混乱」。本文は "Nothing about those years was dramatic" と、激しさを正面から打ち消しています。渦巻くような混乱ではありません。
morass "nothing about them moved" が決め手です。六年間まったく進まない、抜け出せない停滞を表すので、泥沼を意味する morass が入ります。
precipice 「断崖・崖っぷち」。崩壊寸前や転落といった危機は本文にありません。書かれているのは、ただ進まなかった六年間です。
zephyr 「そよ風」で心地よさを含む語（プラス方向）。六年も止まったままの許認可手続きを指す語としては方向が逆です。

Soil scientists have long puzzled over the dark earths scattered through the central Amazon. The pale clay around them takes a plow as readily as any other soil; the problem is never whether it can be farmed but for how long, since a garden cleared from it fails within three seasons. The dark patches, by contrast, are still extraordinarily centuries after they were made: a single plot yields harvest after harvest with no fertilizer at all, and the yields show no sign of falling off.
arable arable は「耕作に適する」という意味ですが、周りの pale clay についても「takes a plow as readily as any other soil」と書かれており、耕せること自体は両者の違いになっていません。文章は「the problem is never whether it can be farmed but for how long」と、耕せるかどうかは問題ではないと明言しているので、耕作可能という点を述べる arable では対比が成り立ちません。
arid arid は「極度に乾燥した」で、乾いて作物が育たない土地を指します。しかしこの土は「a single plot yields harvest after harvest with no fertilizer at all」と、何度も収穫を生み出しています。乾燥の話は文章のどこにも出てこず、意味も逆になります。
fecund 空欄の直後に「a single plot yields harvest after harvest with no fertilizer at all」とあり、さらに「the yields show no sign of falling off」と続きます。肥料なしで何度も収穫が取れ、しかも落ちないという生産力そのものの豊かさを言う語が必要なので fecund が入ります。
verdant verdant は草木が茂って青々と見える様子、つまり見た目の緑を言う語です。ここで褒められているのは地表の緑ではなく土の中身の力で、「the yields show no sign of falling off」と収穫量の続き方が根拠になっています。しかも「centuries after they were made」と長期間にわたる土の性質を述べているので、その時の見た目を表す verdant では合いません。
