For most of the nineteenth century, the boundaries fixed by the original county survey were treated as . Councils argued openly about tax rates and school districts, yet no one proposed redrawing a single surveyed border, and when a historian published evidence in 1871 that the surveyors' instruments had been faulty, local newspapers attacked her for raising the question at all.
divine divine は「神に由来する、神のような」という最も強い語です。しかしこの境界線を定めたのは「the original county survey」、つまり人間の測量であって神ではありません。

The pamphlets Elias Whitcomb printed in 1843 were in tone. Each opened with a long passage on the duty of charity and the sinfulness of profit, and each closed by naming the neighbors he judged insufficiently generous. His own ledgers, opened by his heirs decades later, show that he gave away nothing in those years and lent money at rates the town's other merchants refused to charge.
agnostic agnostic は「神の存在は証明できない」という立場を表します。この文で問題になっているのは神についての考え方ではなく、説教と実際の行動の矛盾です。
ascetic ascetic は実際に自分を厳しく律し、欲を断っている人に使います。Whitcomb は何一つ施さず、他の商人が拒むほど高い利率で貸していたので、自己否定を実践していません。
idolatrous idolatrous は何かを過度に崇拝することです。パンフレットは profit を sinful だと非難しており、何かを崇め立てている描写はどこにもありません。
sanctimonious 「the duty of charity」を説き他人を裁いておきながら、帳簿は「he gave away nothing in those years」と示しています。言葉と実際の行いが食い違い、信心深いふりをしているだけなので sanctimonious です。

The rule that governed the monastery in the fourth century was even by the standards of its own era. Travelers who arrived expecting the monks to boast of the two meals a day, the winters without fire, and the single garment issued each year found instead that they refused to discuss them, and one visitor complained that he could not get a word about the diet out of anyone.
agnostic agnostic は「神の存在は証明できない」という立場を表す語です。この文章に書かれているのは「the two meals a day, the winters without fire, and the single garment issued each year」という生活上の規則だけで、神の存在をどう考えるかという話は一言も出てきません。修道院の規則の厳しさを言い表す語にはなりません。
ascetic 空所は修道院の規則がどういうものかを説明する語で、その中身が「the two meals a day, the winters without fire, and the single garment issued each year」という食事・暖房・衣服を削り切った生活です。しかも「even by the standards of its own era」とあり、当時の基準でも際立つ厳しさなので、厳格な自己否定を意味する ascetic がぴたりと合います。
divine divine は「神聖な」「この上なく素晴らしい」とほめる語です。しかしここで説明されているのは規則そのものの厳しさで、「the two meals a day, the winters without fire, and the single garment issued each year」は称賛の対象ではなく、耐え忍ぶ内容として並べられています。当時の基準と比べて厳しいという文の流れに、ほめ言葉は入りません。
sanctimonious sanctimonious は信心深いふりを見せびらかす、という非難の語です。ところがこの文章では、自慢を期待して来た旅人に対し修道士たちは「they refused to discuss them」、さらに「he could not get a word about the diet out of anyone」とあり、苦行を人に見せる様子がまったくありません。実際に禁欲しているのに黙っている人たちなので、ふりをしているという語は逆になります。

The carnival songs that folklorists collected in the 1920s are . They set the words of the funeral mass to dance tunes and hand the saints the vices of tavern drunkards. Village priests who had long tolerated ordinary joking about the clergy petitioned the bishop to ban these particular songs, which they said went far past teasing.

idolatrous idolatrous は何かを過度に崇拝することです。この歌は聖人を崇めるどころか、酒場の酔っぱらいの悪徳を与えて貶めています。
profane 「set the words of the funeral mass to dance tunes」や聖人に酔っぱらいの悪徳を与える行為は、聖なるものへの露骨な侮辱です。priests 自身が「went far past teasing」と述べており、軽いからかいを超えた不敬なので profane が必要です。
sacrosanct sacrosanct は「神聖すぎて批判できない」という意味です。この歌は bishop に禁止を求められている側、つまり批判されている対象であって、侵しがたいものではありません。
